CIL Ramp Program

A new Disability and Health website has been launched that features four narrated slideshows developed with women from Florida who are living with physical disabilities. These slideshows (called Photo-maps), show and tell about the helpful and challenging things that these women encountered while getting to and from, and during an actual health care appointment (such as: transportation issues, and accessible tables). We are inviting everyone to log on, view the Photo-maps and provide feedback through a brief and easy online evaluation. These Photo-maps should be of interest to anyone who is living with disabilities, providing health care or assistance to persons with disabilities, or  interested in disability and access to healthcare. We are offering an optional one credit hour of continuing education for health care providers who complete the evaluation. This project was developed as part of the WITH~USS study; a Komen for the Cure-funded research partnership between the Center for Independent Living of North Central Florida and the University of Florida to better understand the barriers and facilitators to breast health screening for women living with physical disabilities.

Funding was provided by The MS Society, Center for Independent Living and The University of Florida to build this ramp for a family in Satsuma, FL (Putnam County).

Advocacy

Our organization is well known for strongly advocating for accessible and affordable transportation options for people with disabilities. Recently, we worked with an area developer as well as transit staff to insure that a new property in Gainesville provided full accessibility at its very nice bus stop.

The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council (FDDC) has a great new publication entitled "Let's Go! -- A Guide to Getting Around Your Community in Florida".  This shows you a county by county overview of Medicaid and public transportation services available for each county with maps and the contact information for the Medicaid transportation provider for that county.  Also included for each county is information about who to call for information about disaster planning in each county.

To check it out on-line, or to order copies, go to the FDDC website:  http://www.fddc.org/publications  and scroll down to that title.

The North Central Florida Center of Independent Living and the University of Florida are teaming up to create a program to help people with disabilities stop using tobacco. We need people who would be interested in serving as a Board Member. The goal of the board is to help with the project and serve as a voice for persons with a disability. All members will be paid for their time.

You may be able to serve if:

· You are a person with a disability who use (or have used) tobacco products

· You are a caregiver of a person with a disability who use (or have used) tobacco products

If you are interested in serving on the board or would like more information, please contact William Kennedy at (352) 378-7474.

The Florida Disabled Toll Permit Program was created in 1988 because some disabled drivers expressed concern with their inability to toss coins into the toll baskets on Florida's toll roads. The legislature passed this legislation with the intent to eliminate these barriers for disabled drivers. Since this legislation passed, approximately 4000 disabled drivers have been issued permits.

The University of Florida was awarded a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to disseminate a health communications campaign called "The Right To Know". This campaign was developed to promote breast cancer screening among women living with physical disabilities through the dissemination of print and audio health education materials. This campaign is a part of a larger project awarded to the University of Florida to establish the Florida Office on Disability and Health.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. And living with a disability does not make you immune. Know the facts about breast cancer and why you need to make screening a regular part of your health care.  If you are age 40 years or older, be sure to have a screening mammogram every one to two years.

What does Florida have in store for SCIs in the future?  Well, why not help shape the answer to this question by becoming an active participant in the discussion?  WellFlorida Council, Inc. on behalf of Florida Alliance for Assistive Services and Technology (FAAST), FAAST Spinal Cord Injury Resource Center, and the Florida Department of Health Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCIP) is conducting a state-wide study to uncover the needs of individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and their families.  This assessment will be used to form Florida's State Plan for Spinal Cord Injury.

There will be a series of 10 focus groups throughout the state to identify service and support needs of individuals with SCI. These groups will be conducted in the following locations: Pensacola, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, and Miami in October and November. Participants will receive a $20 gift card incentive for participating in a focus group.  Individuals that are interested in the participating in a focus group MUST call 1-877-678-9355 x114 to find the group closest to them and reserve their spot.

Additionally, individuals with SCI and their caregivers are invited to participate in an online survey to share their opinions.  This survey will be conducted during the month of October.  Visit www.wellflorida.org and click on "Florida's Survey of the Needs of Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury."  Those that complete the survey will be entered into a drawing to win one of four $25 gift cards.
